Happy belated Halloween! It has been fantastic going out and meeting new people and asking them all sorts of questions about their costumes over the last weekend— I didn’t particularly dress up myself, and the one day I did I just decided to go as a generic ghost (having long black hair and a white dress made it a very easy feat). Now that things have been winding down, wigs put away and laptops opened as people prepare themselves for a new, busy academic week ahead, I thought to myself: why not do a little Halloween throwback—with a twist? So here are some very scary Halloween costumes, as seen on runways throughout the years, sandwiched between some contemplations of my own as I procrastinate locking in on this Monday! Happy end of Halloweekend 2024, babies!
The Mummy
As it goes, the mummy might be the most effortless, time-efficient Halloween costume of all time. Wrap yourself in some sheets of fabric (or toilet paper if you’re in a pinch), throw a shirt on top for the sake of covering up, and you’re hot to go to tear up that party down the street! It will just be a hassle undressing all those layers from your body. Thankfully, you might not be the only one struggling to unwrap yourself—ask the models from this Issey Miyake Couture SS1998 show for tips and advice. Technologically impressive, hauntingly chic, they are the coolest mummies in town, though the restrictions in movement mean they probably can’t hit the dance floor as well as you do—but aren’t mummies meant to be still anyhow?
The Angel
I think every girl can be an angel, even the ones who don’t go to Church on Sundays and have made peace with the fact that they will never see the Pearly Gates (that’s me!). There
are no rules to playing pretend. Walking around my college campus this Halloweekend, I can count at least five different flavors of the angel costume: from lacy thigh highs and fluffy bloomers to floor-length gowns and silver necklaces, it is just that versatile. Though none of us should strive to be biblically accurate, we can always be angelic, ethereal, divine, and a little otherworldly, just as a treat. Surely, Alexander McQueen also had that idea in mind when he brought this look to the Givenchy Couture SS1999 runway.
The Witch
This is the first thing that comes to my mind whenever someone mentions dressing up for Halloween, and for good reason. She’s the icon, the legend, the staple of every single Halloween party. Nothing looks better on a woman than a top hat and a broom at the side, also the ability to hex someone and perform ritual sacrifices. It’s been such a pleasure every Halloween to see how such a simple concept can be elevated, and like the angel, everyone does it so differently, and they look spectacular every time. In this blog post, I would like to highlight how Thierry Mugler did it. This witchy look from the Couture SS1997 Runway is seriously imposing and grandly mystical, a femme-fatale wet dream.
The American Psycho
Some of the best costumes this season, in my opinion, are ones that pay homage to cinema—though I’m clearly biased as a film major. My roommate went out dressed as Billy, the puppet from Saw. A close friend decided that she would be Mia Wallace. Though most memorable to me was seeing an ex-turned-close-friend dazzle on her Instagram story, wearing a suit strewn with fake blood and yielding
an axe. I felt exceptionally proud, but I can’t take any credit since she watched American Psycho long before we even met. As a menswear enthusiast and lover of film, of course I get giddy whenever someone pulls out their inner Patrick Bateman, and of course I totally freaked when one of my favorite fashion houses—Saint Laurent—gave a subtle nod to the character in their FW2024 Menswear Collection. Give it up for impeccable tailoring with a side of insanity.
So these are my haute takes on haute couture to bring the sexiest, spookiest, fashion forward weekend to a close. I hope you all had fun dressing up! Catch you next Halloween season on the runway.
