If you lost your entire wardrobe, what are the first five things that you would buy?

Dear Tess,
This is one of the best questions, maybe ever. I am such a sucker for a concise capsule wardrobe, all while making sure that your own individual je ne sais quoi is present. Have your go to’s, but also have some out of the box pieces that can give you that extra boost on your way out the door. This is a hard thing to do, no doubt. I am still working on it myself. But, I still believe there are five things that are the most important to have: magic jeans, firm white tee, fun dress, interesting yet understated jacket, and a statement necklace.
Starting with the hardest thing on this list, the magic jeans. The magic jeans cup your heinie, pinch just the right amount, aren’t too tight or too loose, hit the middle of your ankle bones, wrap around your hips, allow you to squat, and look effortless. You know what I’m talking about. My pair of magic jeans look different from yours, from hers, from his. I have been on the hunt for my magic jeans for as long as I can remember. Some have come close, but close only counts in horse shoes. So, I would say put the most effort towards them out of everything else on this list. Once you find them, they will never ever fail you. Dress em up or dress em down. They are the chameleon of fashion, so go ahead and get a pair!
Firm white tee. This one is not so hard to find. Personally, I get mine from the little boys section at thrift stores. No matter where you are, every thrift store will have a size 12 Haine’s plain white tee. There is something about their thick collar, slightly cropped hem, and starchy cotton that feel structured, yet tailored. I wear mine three times a week, with magic jeans, with a flowy skirt, or over a dress. Just like the jeans, this will never fail you. Throw it on without a second thought and never look back.
A fun dress. This one is very much so opinionated as I am very much so a dress girl. Some people aren’t, and that is totally fine. So if that’s you, skip this paragraph. But if it’s not, please, stay a while. To me, the perfect fun dress is one that is hard to find a replica of. So, that unfortunately means that the best one’s are second hand. One with a pattern, with different colors, an uneven hemline, sheer fabric, whatever! To me, they show confidence, intention, and individuality. I have had my best luck with second hand Dolce and Gabbana dresses from the 90s. I understand that that may be a little pricey, but look them up, get the feel, and you will know what I mean.
Interesting yet understated jacket. Listen, everyone needs a layer. I don’t care who you are, it’s a fact. So, you don’t want to blend in with all the other normies in their normie jackets, you want to let people know who you are! So definitely find something you can wear with a lot of different things, but maybe it has a race stripe down the middle, or a patch, or a print on the back, or a fun collar. Whatever! You want to be warm but also unique, doll.
And lastly, a statement necklace. Now, my best statement necklaces have been gifts to me so I can’t speak to that, but I can say that there are some pretty great ones at flea markets, especially at the costume jewelry tables. Don’t be afraid to make it a little campy. In fact, the campier, the better! There is something to be said about a dainty little chain, but a real show stopper can bring your outfit to life in a matter of seconds. And if it fails you, which it probably won’t, it is a conversation starter!
And, that is my capsule wardrobe. If you learned something, great. If not, you still got my two cents! Love you all.
