Advice Column: Rainy Days

“Hi – it was raining today when I was getting ready to go to brunch. I just never know what shoes to wear when it’s gray & forecast to be sunny and rainy! Help!”

And…

“Perfect rainy day fit in humid NYC?”

Dear Tete & Little Ruby,

Thanks for your questions! The rain in NYC right now must clearly be sparking some climate anxiety, so let me help you out ASAP. I think footwear is the most exciting part of a rainy day. When the sky is gray, you have to counteract the atmosphere with bold shoes. While hunter boots are practical and on the rise (hello, gardening chic), I’ve been gravitating towards rubber clogs. Hear me out: I’ve found these incredible, bright red rubber clogs that I think medical workers wear because they are machine washable, but they are also deliriously cute and elevate any rainy day outfit to a more fashionable level. Mine are from the brand Calzuro, but I know Hunter, Jeffrey Campbell, and Merry People make similar ones. Bonus points because they are platforms, meaning your feet stay away from unwanted puddle slippage. If you are in the mood for a boot, look no further than the Ganni rubber sole boots. I got mine with a black body and electric blue soles half off in Paris, and I can confidently say that they are my most complimented shoes by a long shot. Are they 100% waterproof? No. But they absolutely do the job without creating an eyesore.

The next most important item is your bottoms. Because it’s humid, lightweight fabric is necessary. That means no jeans in any form – skirt, shorts, or pants. Considering they are on the rise and incredibly pragmatic for this circumstance, I think capris that slightly flare at the bottom – no bell bottom capris, please God – are the ideal rain pants, especially when you don’t want your legs getting soaked. Gogo gave me the best pair of capris this spring. The one caveat is that they are her mom’s old maternity pants. The plus side is that I can wear them out to dinner and literally eat till my stomach explodes. When I fold over the top, they give a cute double-layer texture, so it’s a win-win, in my opinion. The pants are brandless, but any thrift store will have a good pair of linen trousers. Depop is also great, too.

For the top, keep it simple and light with a white tank top. I love Hanes, but Re/Done has a great one, too. Please don’t buy it full price, no tank should be that $$. Try the RealReal for great prices on those types of staples. Add a chunky statement necklace to spruce up the top part of your outfit, like Chopova Lowena (again, don’t buy whole price and wait for an Ssense sale), and you’re golden!

Finally, the umbrella. Please consider your umbrella as just as vital as your shoes. If your budget is infinite, Business & Pleasure Co. makes the upper echelon of rain gear. If you’re on planet earth, buy a colorful target one to match your rain clog, or find the complementary color with your shoes if you want to take a different path.

I hope this helps you dance in the rain, babies!
